What is it about: It’s an Indian espionage thriller created by Neeraj Pandey for Hotstar Specials. The story follows a Research and analysis expert Himmat Singh who is under scrutiny and investigated for the money spent on secret operations tracking a mastermind behind 6 terrors attacks on India. The series is directed by Neeraj Pandey and Shivam Nair.

This is a miniseries which is set on a strong premise. It has an unconventional narration which usually a genre of this sort in Bollywood avoids to keep the audience engaged. But this method works in their favour. It takes a convenient period of time to dive into action. But the makers were brilliant with their writing and established each and every character creating a strong space and impression on the audience and made to keep them invested in the series.

Kavita Sachdeva Wani did an amazing job with the casting and assembled a strong set of characters. To start with Kay Kay Menon as Himmat Singh, who did a brilliant job. He plays it with utmost diligence that “Cool” seems an understatement. Karan Tacker as Farook Ali did a great job. Followed by Sajjad Delafrooz as Hafiz Ali and Vinay Pathak as Abbas’s commendable performances. The rest of the supporting cast which includes Muzammil Ibrahim, Saiyami Kher, Meher Vij and Vipul Gupta were wonderful.

It may start on a slow note but develops strong and explodes with nail biting last episode.

The series had an amazing technical team which put the series on par with any international espionage series. The making was top notch with amazing cinematography by Sudheer Palsane and Arvind Singh. Followed by Praveen Kathikuloth’s crisp editing.  And the VFX was great. The series is spread across 8 episodes and makes sure to keep a sane balance between the vision of the creator and the entertainment.

Verdict: Neeraj Pandey and Shivam Nair did an amazing job in sharing the director’s cap and presented a well packed web-series which does justice to the genre. It may start on a slow note but develops strong and explodes with nail biting last episode. If you’re a fan of spy thrillers, I definitely recommend Special Ops. Don’t miss this one; it’s currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
